At least eight people were killed after militants stormed a police station near Bannu, a town bordering Pakistan’s tribal areas, police say.

Details of how the attack unfolded are unclear. Reports say militants attacked the station with grenades and arms sparking a gun battle.

Three policemen and two attackers were killed as were three civilians who were at an adjacent mosque, police say.

The Pakistani Taliban have said they carried out the attack.

They said it was to avenge the death of a relative of their former chief Baitullah Mehsud.

The attack on the police station lasted for about an hour and the nearby mosque and shops in the area were also damaged during the attack.

The Pakistani Taliban frequently target security forces in Pakistan’s volatile north-west.

This attack happened in the Kaki area, 13km (eight miles) south-west of Bannu.

The region is adjacent to the North Waziristan tribal area, known as a stronghold for a number of militant factions.

At a programme in Parsa today, Minister Yadav said that agreement among political parties would be made to find out solution to the political crisis.

He said reinstatement of the CA could be an option for consensus by holding discussions regarding the disputed issues of the new constitution though the elections are the best alternative to end the current political stalemate.

The Communication Minister said discussions with leaders of the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are going on to make conclusion either to reinstate the CA or hold elections as there was no other alternative to political consensus and collaboration.

Duncan suffered a heart attack in July and died at a hospital in Los Angeles after failing to recover. He was nominated for an Oscar in 2000 for his portrayal as convicted murderer John Coffey alongside Tom Hanks in The Green Mile.

Paying tribute to his co-star, Hanks described him as “magic”.

A former bodyguard, the 6ft 4in (1.93m) Duncan was an imposing figure who played a wide variety of action roles and also voiced animated parts.

His versatility saw him team up with Bruce Willis to save the Earth in Armageddon, then play it for laughs in Will Ferrell’s racing comedy Talladega Nights.

In recent years he was seen in US sitcom Two and a Half Men and could be heard in animated comedy Family Guy.

But he will be remembered primarily for his role as John Coffey a convicted murderer possessed of extraordinary healing powers, in the adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Green Mile.

His performance won him a nomination as best supporting actor and kick-started an acting career that only began once he gave up bodyguard work in his thirties.

Duncan, who was born in Chicago in 1957, died on Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

His fiancee, the reality TV personality Reverend Omarosa Manigault, asked for privacy until his funeral and memorial events were announced.

Strike action called by the UFO union was under way at Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin airports. Lufthansa cancelled short and medium-haul flights but also services to and from Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Beijing and Mexico City.

UFO and Lufthansa have been in dispute over pay and working conditions.

Workers held a day-long strike last Friday. The UFO union is seeking a pay increase of 5% for cabin staff for 15 months starting from January this year. The union said there had been no pay increases for three years.

It also wants guarantees that Lufthansa will not outsource jobs and use more temporary workers, as it has done in Berlin. Lufthansa’s latest offer was for a pay increase of about 3.5%.

The airline is undergoing a 1.5bn euro (£1.19bn) cost-cutting programme to offset rising fuel costs and tackle competition from low-cost and Gulf carriers.

It posted a 24% drop in second-quarter earnings to 229m euros from a year earlier. In May, Lufthansa announced it would axe 3,500 office jobs.

Lufthansa has about 19,000 cabin crew and the UFO union represents about two-thirds of them.
